President calls early elections after government falls

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has called early elections for May 18, appealing to all parties for a “clarifying” and “dignified” debate that will “strengthen and not weaken democracy”, Público reports. His announcement last night came after a meeting of the Council of State in which he said there was unanimous agreement to send the country to a third vote in four years.
